What is the shackle?

Shackles are common hardware used for lifting and securing heavy loads. When choosing and using shackles, it's important to consider several factors to ensure safe and effective operation. Here's a guide to help you choose and correctly use shackles.

How to choose the shackle?

Determine the load requirements: Assess the weight and dimensions of the load you need to lift or secure. This information will help you select the appropriate shackle size and working load limit (WLL). The WLL indicates the maximum weight the shackle can safely handle.

Choose the right shackle type: Shackles come in different designs, such as screw pin, bolt-type, or quick-release shackles. Screw pin shackles are commonly used for non-permanent applications, while bolt-type shackles provide a more secure and permanent connection. Quick-release shackles allow for rapid attachment and detachment.

Consider the shackle material: Shackles are typically made from materials like steel or stainless steel. Steel shackles are suitable for general lifting applications, while stainless steel shackles are preferred for corrosive or marine environments.

Check for markings and certifications: Look for markings on the shackle that indicate its size, WLL, and manufacturer.

How to correct use the lifting rigging shackle?

Inspect the shackle before use: Before each use, carefully inspect the shackle for any signs of damage, wear, or deformation. Check for cracks, bent pins, or elongation of the shackle body. If any defects are detected, do not use the shackle and replace it immediately.

Attach the shackle properly: When connecting the shackle to the lifting or securing point, ensure that the load is evenly distributed across the shackle's bow or body, depending on the type. Avoid side-loading the shackle, as it can significantly reduce its working load limit.

Secure the shackle pin: For screw pin shackles, tighten the pin securely using the appropriate tool, such as a wrench or pliers. This will prevent the pin from unscrewing due to vibrations or movement during lifting.

Avoid shock loading: Shock loading occurs when a sudden and excessive force is applied to the shackle. It can significantly weaken or damage the shackle. Always lift and lower loads smoothly and avoid sudden jerks or drops.

Use proper rigging techniques: Ensure that the shackle is correctly integrated into the rigging system. Follow industry-standard rigging practices and use appropriate slings, hooks, or other components as needed.

Store and maintain the shackles: After use, clean the shackles and store them in a dry and secure location. Regularly inspect and maintain the shackles to ensure they remain in good working condition.
