How to Maintain the Rigging?

Rigging comprises the system of ropes, cables and chains, which support a sailing ship or sail boat's masts—standing rigging, including shrouds and stays—and which adjust the position of the vessel's sails and spars to which they are attached—the running rigging, including halyards, braces, sheets.It is a force-carrying tool that realizes the movement of the object between the hoisting machine and the object to be lifted, and the force-receiving member for stabilizing the space structure.

Rigging is widely used in ports, petrochemicals, engineering machinery, paper machinery, industrial control, logistics and transportation, pipeline auxiliary equipment, marine engineering, airport construction, bridges, aerospace and other important industries. The type of Rigging

The rigging mainly consists of metal rigging and synthetic fiber rigging.

How to check the rigging

1. If the rig actually fits boat. Are the wires the correct length? Are the turnbuckles roughly centered up? Check that any fittings are securely riveted on and have no movement. Ensure that any riveted fittings of dissimilar metals use a jointing paste  to keep them separate.

2. check is the condition of the wire and terminals. Stainless steel wire and terminals are remarkably durable but they do not last forever. Stainless steel work hardens as it ages, it become more and more brittle, and corrosion is also an enemy. It is important to thoroughly check the wire and terminals at least once a season.

3.Tune up rigging. A rig will last much longer if it is properly tuned. A rig should not be too tight or too loose. A rig that is too loose will shock load on every tack . A dramatically over-tightened rig can actually permanently damage the wire, which can stretch beyond its elastic recovery point and fail catastrophically.

4.Check split pins are in place. The pros use a blob of silicone instead of tape over the bent ends to cover the sharp edges. Tape can create a mini greenhouse effect which can become an ideal environment for encouraging corrosion.
